As we have all learned Iowa State offers many opportunities. For example, I don't think I could even count the number of emails I get from different clubs on campus. As a freshman I didn't know what I would be getting into, and I didn't want to overburden myself in my first semester. I chose only two organization that I would be an active participant of.
The first one I joined is technically two groups, but they go hand in hand. Both group go by acronym names, ISSS and ISAS. To be honest I'm not one hundred percent sure I know what the first one means. Let me rephrase that I'm one hundred percent sure that I DON'T know what it means. The second is the Iowa State Aerospace Society. In both cases I chose these because they work with my major to finish the semester projects. ISSS works with the first semester project, the Rocket simulation. ISAS works on the second semester project, the RC planes. Both have proven beneficial to my education.
The second (or third depending on how you look at it) organization I joined was one I had to apply and interview for. The Engineering Ambassador and Mentor Program (TEAM) is an organization that sponsors many events on campus. TEAM members give tours of the college of engineering every week day. They also set up special events to promote the college as a whole. I joined TEAM because I felt it would be a good opportunity to raise my leadership and people to people skills.
I believe that nothing you do is a waste of time. Even if you can not register it, every little thing we do teaches us something. The more things we do, the more we are able to learn The more we learn, the more likely it is that we can accomplish our goals. So, form the words of Nike, "Just do it," and be proud of what you've done.
